Coxmate Cox Box Systems
The Coxmate cox box range of electronic assistants for coxswains brings the benefit of current electronics technology to coxing amplification. The Coxmate cox box designs are the result of a lengthy and intensive study into the needs of rowing, and how existing systems can be improved.
We provide amplification systems, speed measurement and wiring looms with speakers for coxed boats. During 2008 a Coxless Boat series will be released, the Coxmate HC. Email us if you are interested in advance notice of these new releases.
There are three levels of coxing amplification system:
- AA an audio only model designed for durability and low cost
- SRT provides audio amplifier, stroke rate indicator, stop watch and a CB radio input jack. It is designed for durability and ease of use.
- SCT includes all the features of the SRT, plus a CB radio input jack for radio handset connection to the coach, a large memory capacity for storing rowing data, and an optional speed sensor or GPS, a link to connect to your PC and a software analysis package to analyse your performance.

Coxmate SCT cox box
Coxmate SCT and GPS sensor
The Coxmate SCT cox box is the top of the range unit and takes rowing electronics to a new level. It incorporates all the features of the SRT, plus an optional speed sensor or GPS speed measurement a large memory capacity for storing rowing data, and optional link to connect to your PC and a software analysis package to analyse your performance.
It is fitted in a new, tough ABS waterproof box with the unique Coxmate magnetic
mounting base. This simplifies fitting it into the boat and enables
position and angle adjustment. It does away with the problems caused by
frequent operation of the 4-pin rubber connectors and takes less than a
second to fit into the boat.
The SCT gives the cox an immediate display of speed, distance per stroke ("cover"), distance, velocity ratio, rating, stroke count and time. It precisely records the boat's performance. Velocity is recorded approximately every 20m/s2 with a sensor/impeller and up to two hours of rowing data can be stored. This data is time and date stamped and can then be transferred to a PC and used to analyse performance. Each rowing record can be annotated with comments, detailing crew names, weather conditions etc. A database is then built up.
The analysis enables multiple variables e.g. rating, speed, speed ratio (min/max speed during a stroke) to be displayed on same graph, or the same variable, e.g. speed to be compared from different records. For example four different start sequences can be compared on the same graph. The display could be over a single stroke or a 2,000 metre race.
The SCT is a sophisticated device, with
considerable storage and processing capability. To ensure users can
always benefit from developments in the future, it is capable of having
new versions of software downloaded over the Internet. And so you will
get free easy accessible bug fixes and download new software add-ons as
they are written.
Speed measurement is effected in one of two ways either with a speed sensor and impeller mounted under the hull and wired into the SCT unit to provide the speed data. Or with a GPS pick-up mounted behind the coxswain.
Different lengths of speed sensor cable are available for 4s and 8s and bow- and stern-coxed boats. The impeller is in a fully enclosed mounting thus protecting it somewhat from water borne debris.
Using a GPS sensor, only enables land speed to be recorded. Stroke profile data is not possible because of the frequency of data upload (approx 0.8 secs). Using the speed sensor and impeller, the software records a graph of each stroke taken. More detail on speed measurement options is here .
Note: You will need a SCT plus either a GPS or Speed sensor cable and PC software. The SCT Kit includes mounting bracket, battery charger, carry
case and syringe of silicone grease. [it does not include GPS. speed sensor, software, wiring loom
or speakers]. Buy one now.
All Coxmate products are fully compatible with Nielsen Kellerman NK Cox-Box® wiring systems.

Coxmate SRT cox box
The Coxmate SRT cox box contains an audio amplifier, stroke rate indicator and stop watch. It is designed for durability and ease of use.
It has a tough ABS waterproof box and is supplied with an adjustable bracket using a unique magnetic mounting system.* This simplifies fitting the unit into the boat and enables position and angle adjustment. It does away with the problems caused by frequent operation of the 4 pin rubber connectors (broken wires, loose connections); it takes less than a second to fit the SRT into the boat. The microphone connects to the SRT with a robust waterproof jack-type plug. A radio input jack is provided as standard for coaches to speak direct to the crew with a radio handset.
This coxing amplifier uses the latest digital technology and battery life is 60% longer lasting up to 15 hours - that's five outings! The battery automatically powers down
if the speakers are disconnected. Volume settings are automatically
remembered between outings. All Coxmate products are fully compatible
with Nielsen Kellerman NK Cox-Box® wiring systems.
The SRT Kit includes mounting bracket, battery charger, carry case and syringe of silicone grease. [it does not include wiring loom and speakers]. Buy one now .

Coxmate AA cox box

Coxmate AA Cox Box
The Coxmate AA is an audio-only model. It has been designed to be durable and low cost. An AA unit can be plugged directly into an existing Nielsen Kellerman NK Cox-Vox® or Cox-Box®wiring loom.
The AA has a large capacity rechargeable battery storage with a sophisticated battery management system to increase battery life. The unit can be left permanently connected to the charger, as it turns the charger off once batteries are full. This prevents degradation of the batteries. There is also a low level battery warning and charge full indicator.
Compared to competing products, the Coxmate AA has increased audio power which reduces distortion, increases efficiency and battery operating time. Volume settings are remembered between outings and the microphone connection to the control box is permanent – removing problems associated with unreliable connection. Buy one now.
Wiring looms for the AA (without seat sensor magnet for stroke rate) are available to buy

Wiring Loom and Speakers
Coxmate Wiring Loom accommodates up to 4 speakers in an eight – providing even sound volume throughout the boat, and enabling the cox to communicate with his crew but not the competing crew alongside! This allows four speakers for an eight and two speakers for a four. The wiring is modular enabling each speaker section to be separately tested and maintained.
They are more robust than other designs, the speakers are smaller and
mount flush with the boat (no bracket to bend) and the sound quality is
higher.
Boatbuilders offering Coxmate looms:
- Ray Sims offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Antony Scoone for details.
- Janousek offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Phil Gregory for details.
- Stampfli offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Simon Johnson for details.
- Swift offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Gareth Gruenbaum for details.
- Filippi offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Paul Willis for details.
- Empacher offers Coxmate as an option - please ask Graham Lloyd for details.
The wiring loom design includes:
- All connectors are fitted with metal clamps for strain relief (protects against damage during connection/disconnection).
- The wiring is modular and so if one speaker fails, it is easy to replace that section alone.
- Speakers are slim, waterproof and mounted directly onto the boat without brackets thus maintaining direction of sound.
- All cables are double insulated to provide additional mechanical protection.
- All copper wires are tinned to reduce corrosion.
- All connectors are fitted with visual markers to assist in aligning of two halves during connection - "join the yellow dots".
- Main connector is fitted with a retentive cap. This is used to protect connector when it is disconnected from the control unit.
Nielsen Kellerman NK Cox-Box® and Cox-Vox® systems can be used with Coxmate wiring looms. The fitments to join the wires are the same.

21/12/06 Greetings from Falmouth Rowing Club.I have just bought a first SRT for our club. The SRT is quite excellent. One has only to open the box to see that at last here is a sound MARINE INSTRUMENT at a sensible price. WELL DONE! John Poland
